Women of color represent a third of voting age women and this number is on the rise. Yet we don’t see ourselves, our priorities or our communities’ needs reflected in the national conversation about what matters for our country going forward. 

She the People STORIED is here to change the narrative.

She the People STORIED is a 501c3 organization focused on elevating the voices and experiences of women of color in the civic discourse. Our mission is to inspire a civically engaged pipeline of women of color that is positively transforming our democracy. We are shaping the media with women of color focused content, and telling our stories to journalists and major news outlets. As we amplify women of color’s voices, we change the perceptions and awareness of this growing community, and ensure that there is space for women of color to fully civically engage.

We are already seeing small shifts in the narrative. She the People STORIED has searched out the stories of women of color and created content to keep women of color engaged and resourced with information.  

Our signature program in 2020 is a docuseries highlighting women of color “hidden figures” in the South and Southwest who are bravely defending and expanding enfranchisement during the biggest health, economic crisis in history. For example, we’ll tell stories of organizers in Georgia who have faced down blatant voter suppression tactics only to find their efforts to secure democracy in the state challenged by the COVID-19 fueled health crises, record high unemployment, and the threat to basic food and shelter security.  They work diligently to engage voters even as top state leadership attempts to frame vote by mail as fraudulent. The docuseries content will be user-generated and professionally edited and distributed. As they film their daily lives on smartphones, these women will tell the story of organizing through the lens of a pandemic that has radically changed mobilization efforts.
